The ADVANCE guide to fake Net Zero

Net Zero is fake.

That’s the first thing to understand.

It will not do what its supporters claim, but it will cost you more.

So if it’s fake, what is it really?

In its most basic definition, Net Zero is the current government policy that Australia’s energy grid will work with ‘net zero’ carbon emissions by the year 2050.

That means any greenhouse gas it does produce will be offset.

That means no coal and gas. And it means wind farms and solar panels.

This is, of course, in an effort to address the causes of climate change.

Which is the first reason it’s fake: it will make no difference to the climate.

When Labor, the Greens or the Teals look at a flood or bushfire and say it could’ve been prevented if we stopped burning coal. That’s just not true.

They’ll call you a “climate denier” if you question them, but that’s a distraction from the fact that Australia’s climate is not isolated from the rest of the world.

It’s not an algorithm that will reduce fires by, say, 10 per cent if we reduce emissions by 20 per cent.

The world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters like China don’t care about pursuing Net Zero. That means if Australia completely turned off our electricity grid tomorrow, it would make no difference to global emissions.

In other words: fake.

Then there’s the “Net” part of “Net Zero”.

In short, that means there’s a complex web of subsidies, trade-offs, credits, tree-plantings and other completely made-up nonsense that lets you emit greenhouse gases but then balance it out with something else.

Which is to say, you can continue to do the thing that’s apparently hurting the climate, provided you fund some renewable project, or trade climate credits, or offset by planting trees or whatever.

Fake!

But here’s the part that’s not fake.

Over the last decade the reason your electricity bills have skyrocketed is because of Net Zero.

The entire Australian energy market is now built on this mountain of fake, and the government is subsidising all of it.

They call it the “energy transition” and they are forcing reliable coal out and then paying through the nose to get renewables on the market.

Around $9 billion of your taxes each year are going towards this “transition”.

They claim it’s necessary because we’ll be “left behind” but that is a – you guessed it – fake argument when much of the world is walking back Net Zero commitments.

Why?

Because it doesn’t work.

It will never work.

It’s fake.

This policy is making energy more expensive and less reliable.

And no country can remain prosperous and safe if we can’t keep the lights on.
