Labor/Greens/Teals threaten your freedom of speech

Labor believes it has a right to decide what is acceptable or unacceptable for you to post online, and that they should be in charge of deciding what is true and what is false.

This is coming to a laptop or mobile phone near you, in the form of the latest Labor/Greens/Teal misinformation bill.

Sky News reported on Labor’s claim that misinformation and disinformation poses a “serious threat” to the “safety and wellbeing” of Australians, as well as “our democracy, society and economy”.

This could not be further from the truth.

However, what can we expect from a Labor Government who are obsessed with taking control of the political and social narrative and banning you from saying anything in contradiction?

Wokeness and political correctness is what drives this Labor Government. The Greens and the Teals are right behind them, as long as it suits their radical, left-wing agendas.

As reported by The Australian, the bill defines misinformation as “content (that is) reasonably verifiable as false, misleading or deceptive” and “reasonably likely to cause or contribute to serious harm”.

Of course, this will all depend on your point of view and is completely open to interpretation. Terms like “reasonably verifiable” and “reasonably likely” are ambiguous and open to misuse.

What is considered to be false and misleading by one person may be considered to be truthful and informative to another. A free, democratic society is equipped to deal with disagreements.

The Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) described the proposed legislation as “the single biggest attack on freedom of speech in Australia’s peacetime history”.

Why should the government have the right to judge what you say, based on what THEY think is appropriate?

To ensure you comply with this legislation, Labor proposes that the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) be vested with increased powers to interpret what constitutes misinformation, on a case-by-case basis.

According to ACMA’s 2024-25 Corporate Plan, their stated purpose is “contributing to maximising the economic and social benefits of communications infrastructure, content and services for Australia”.

If you read this and ask yourself what this actually means? You are not alone.

Outsourcing your freedom to ACMA gives them power over what you can and can not say. This is fraught with danger and undemocratic.

Human Rights Commissioner Lorraine Finlay said that “measures taken to combat misinformation and disinformation could themselves risk undermining Australia’s democracy and freedoms.”

Finlay is right. The only person who should have the right to determine if what you say and think is fair and reasonable, is YOU!

In an email sent to Liberal Party members, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said:

  • We cannot have a democracy without first having the freedom to debate ideas, and to challenge the mistakes of those in positions of power.
  • Labor’s misinformation bill seeks to make the government of the day the arbiter of truth.
  • And the government would then require digital platforms to censor the ‘misinformation’ it doesn’t agree with.
  • That is not healthy for our democracy. In fact, it is dangerous.

Hats off to Peter Dutton and the Coalition for opposing this shocking legislation!

Make no mistake. Labor’s misinformation bill is a direct assault on your democratic right to freedom of speech and expression.

If this madness concerns you, just wait until the Greens start dictating what you can and cannot say. How much would they love that?

If our government is allowed to censor what can and can’t be said, then democracy dies. No politician should restrict the right of citizens like you to hear ALL sides of the story.
